What are the methods for airtightness testing?
2025-05-22
There are currently two methods for airtightness testing: a water pressure test and a compressed air test.
The water test involves blocking the product's seals, submerging the product in water, and inflating the product through its air holes to observe whether bubbles appear. If bubbles appear, the product is leaking. The more and larger the bubbles, the greater the leak.
This method of using water to test product sealing is intuitive and allows observation of the leak point. The disadvantage of this method is that the tested product needs to be dried, and it takes a long time to test a single product from testing to drying. Water ingress can damage some electronic products, not only causing water leakage but also damaging internal electronic components, increasing the difficulty of repair. Therefore, many companies do not use this method when testing the airtightness of a large number of products.
The compressed air test method uses a fixture to seal the product, and compressed air is introduced into the product or mold. The airtightness tester's sensor monitors the change in gas in real time, and the airtightness tester finally displays OK or NG on the screen.
This airtightness testing method using compressed air as a medium has many advantages: first, it is non-destructive testing because the testing medium is air, which will not damage the product; second, because air molecules are smaller than water molecules, the test results are more accurate; and the operation is simple and the testing process is fast. This airtightness tester has been widely used in many manufacturers and has been affirmed by customers.
Of course, the disadvantage of this airtightness tester is that it lacks leak detection facilities. Technology is endless. Hopefully, in the near future, we can develop a better airtightness tester.
